At The Story Book Farm Sanctuary, our journey began with roosters, but it didn’t take long for us to realize that there were more animals in need of our care and compassion. Among them were the gentle giants of the barnyard – pigs. Just like roosters, pigs are all too often abandoned, mistreated, and abused. So, we expanded our focus to give these incredible creatures a safe haven and a brighter future.

Meet Our Pig Family

Currently, The Story Book Farm is proud to call 29 pigs our family. Our pig residents are as diverse as they are lovable. Among them, we have:

Snoop: Our patriarch, who holds a special place in our hearts.

Potbellied Pigs: Several potbellied pigs, each with their unique personality.

Julianas: Adorable and spirited Julianas.

Farm Pigs: Two large farm pigs, adding to the charm of our sanctuary.

Kune Kune: One Kune Kune pig, known for their sweet and friendly nature.

Florida Feral Hogs: Three Florida feral hogs, each with their own story of resilience.

Our pig family spans a wide range of ages, from just a few months old to almost 14 years young! They come to us from various sources, including Marion and Lake county animal shelters, strays found in need, and even from a recent hoarding case in Florida. Two of our most recent additions are Bert & Ernie, two boys who have found a forever home with us.

Pigs on the Go

Many of our pigs are social butterflies and go on our mobile petting farm events, where they capture the hearts of everyone they meet. They’re a fun-loving bunch, always ready to share their joy and charm with others.

Fascinating Piggy Fun Facts

Pigs Grow Until They Reach 5 Years Old

Unlike many animals that stop growing early in life, pigs continue to grow until they’re five years old, making each year an adventure of growth and development.

No Such Thing as a “Micro” or “Mini” Pig

The term “micro” or “mini” pig can be misleading. Usually, these pigs are bred at a very young age and deceptively sold as small when, in reality, they can reach sizes of 200-300 pounds with proper nutrition. But hey, more pig to love!

Pigs Are Incredibly Clean

Contrary to common misconceptions, pigs are some of the cleanest animals on the farm. They have a natural inclination to keep their living area tidy.

Pigs Can’t Sweat

Pigs may love to wallow in mud, which cools them off and provides protection from the sun and bugs. Unlike humans, pigs can’t sweat, making mud baths essential for their well-being.

Fifth Smartest Animals in the World

Pigs are incredibly intelligent animals. They can learn their names and even perform tricks. Because they’re so smart, they can get bored easily and thrive when kept in pairs or groups.

Our pigs hold a special place in our hearts, and we’re honored to provide them with a loving and safe home. If you’d like to learn more about our pig family, pig care, or anything else related to our sanctuary, please feel free to reach out to us anytime. These amazing animals bring endless joy to our lives, and we’re happy to share their stories with you.
